美国加州理工学院（California Institute of Technology）创建于1891年，位于加利福尼亚州，这所私立大学的宗旨是“为教育事业、政府及工业发展需要培养富有创造力的科学家和工程师”。
加州理工学院座落于加州巴萨迪那市(Pasadena)，在洛杉矶东北方约十英哩处。学生数区区两千人，大学生九百人，研究生一千一百人。1891年Throop先生在巴萨迪那市中心设立Throop大学 (Throop University)。虽有大学之名，实际只是工艺技术学校。不过，卑微的开始并没有阻碍她的发展，在建校初期许多独具慧眼的学术界与社区领袖便规划学校发展的方向，树立该校以人为本的教育方针。他们主张培养具宏观眼光与创新品质的人才，因此早在1907年便决定解散商业、师资训练、和中小学等课程，只留下理工学院，提供电机、机械和土木工程学士学位课程。

重点学科
加州理工最著名的学科，首推物理，其次是工程、化学、生物、天文学和地质学。这里的每一位大学生，不论主修什么，都要修读5个学期的数学和物理、2个学期化学和1个学期的生物。除了科学之外，还要完成12门人文社会科学课程。经济与政治学也是加州理工的强项。
