Introduction to the University of Nottingham In 1948, Nottingham University gained its independence from London University and became Britain's first new university after the Second World War. It is now considered a prime alternative to Oxford and Cambridge and competition for places is high. There is a low drop-out rate of 4%. A large number of students come from fee-paying schools. Although Nottingham prides itself on being "research-led", its undergraduate courses are strong across the board and the undergraduate student intake increased by almost one third during the 1990s. Doing particularly well at the moment are pyschology , manufaturing engineering , agriculture , and art and design. Subjects such as law and English are also traditional strengths. Sport is also played to a high level. The students' union runs many events and hosts a number of clubs and societies . Politically, it has been castigated for toothlessness, but Nottingham itself has other arenas in which you might hone your radicalism . Among Nottingham's alumni are DH Lawrence, not only a writer but also a former cosmic baseball player , pub visionary Tim Martin and Matthew Bannister , former Radio One supremo.
